The Internet of Things (IoT): Who will take the lead?
The tech sector continues to create significant interest. Whether it be Google DeepMind beating renowned Go player Lee Sedol or the craze of the AR-hit Pokémon Go, tech developments continue to unlock doors to investment opportunities. Over recent years, we have seen particular progress made in machine learning and improved connectivity.
GPU dominator NVIDIA has capitalized on the surging demand for high performance GPU and data centers driven by trends such as deep learning. Its share price has doubled on the basis of a stunning 8x QoQ jump in net income per share.
Some predict the market of the Internet of Things (IoT) will double to $1.46 billion by 2020, which is increasingly supported by the deals being announced. For example, Softbank’s acquisition of the leading mobile chip maker ARM featured a huge 43% premium and is the third largest deal year-to-date.
Large corporates are heading into the IoT arena and big players across industries are looking to catch up with smaller first mover organizations by making substantial investments.
Assume that you will be joining the “IoT Investment Conference” next month, a prestigious event for leading hedge fund managers that focuses on investment trends related to the Internet of Things. You will be making a keynote speech about future investment opportunities in IoT from your chosen sector (e.g. Chip Production). What would be your forecast for your sector and which company would you recommend to invest?
